Growing up on a farm is not considered that unusual when you were raised in the town of Eden, NY. My family’s background is particularly unique because our roots run in both agriculture and medicine. As a general Internist, my father Dr. Kevin N. O’Gorman, cared for the community of Eden for 35 years, operating an independent practice from the town’s railroad depot. His father and grandfather were both physicians as well, operating medical practices in the town of Hamburg and City of Buffalo. My mother’s side of the family have prospered in the vegetable and flower growing business for generations. Following in the agricultural path, my four siblings became local entrepreneurs in organic dairy farming and horticulture. I found myself more curious about medicine, with a deep love for humanity and devotion to the sick and suffering. This passion guided me to pursue a degree in public health and then to on to medical school, becoming the fourth-generation physician in my family.
Many experiences, in addition to the years of higher education and specialty training, nurtured my clinical style and bedside manner. From as early as seven, I walked the hospital wards with my father, listening and observing patients at their most vulnerable. Working on the farm raising animals and tending to the land instilled lessons of hard work and gratification.
Looking to the future, the success of this country’s healthcare system will hinge on our attention to primary care and geriatrics. It is well known that the distribution of healthcare costs is strongly age-dependent, with a disproportionate share of medical resources supporting our elderly in the final year of life. Medicine needs to shift towards anticipating the needs of our aging, preventing foreseeable complications to preserve and protect quality of life. I plan to engage my community by building a patient centered, age friendly primary care practice. Partnering with patients and their families to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Focusing on preventative health, management of chronic disease and aging well to enhance quality of life and promote healthy living.
